WatchTogether
Privacy Policy
WatchTogether lets you watch an online video in sync with a friend and chat while you watch. It has no accounts and no servers of its own. The developer does not collect, receive, store or sell any of your data.
What the extension handles
To work, the extension uses a small amount of information. Here is all of it, where it goes, and who can see it.
| Information | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Display name you type | So your friend sees who is talking or pausing | Your browser + your friend |
| Chat messages and emoji reactions | Live chat during the watch party | Your friend only |
| URL and title of the video you sync | So your friend's tab can open the same video | Your friend only |
| Playback actions (play, pause, seek, speed) | Keeping the video in sync | Your friend only |
| Camera and microphone, only if you start a call | Face cam and voice bubbles | Your friend only, live |
| Settings and session stats (theme, sounds, recap numbers) | Remembering your preferences and building the recap | Your browser only |
How your browsers connect
When you join a room, your room code is turned into a private channel name and an encryption key on your own device.
- To find each other, the two browsers exchange a short encrypted connection handshake through the public relay ntfy.sh. The relay cannot read it. The handshake contains connection details, such as network addresses, needed to set up the call.
- To work out a route through home routers, the browsers ask public STUN servers (
stun.l.google.com,stun.cloudflare.com) for their own public address. These servers do not receive any chat or video information. - After that, everything (chat, playback actions, video URLs, camera and voice) travels directly between the two browsers over an encrypted WebRTC connection. Nothing passes through or is stored on a server.
What we never do
- NEVER Collect or receive your data on a developer server. There isn't one.
- NEVER Track your browsing history. The extension only looks at the page you choose to sync.
- NEVER Sell or share data with advertisers, data brokers or anyone else.
- NEVER Use data for anything other than syncing videos and chatting with your friend.
- NEVER Use data to decide creditworthiness or for lending.
Website access
The extension asks for access to all websites because videos can be on any site. It uses that access only to find the video player on the tab you sync, apply play, pause and seek actions from your friend, and show the chat overlay on top of the video. It does not read or record the content of the pages you visit.
Storage and deleting your data
Your name and settings are kept in your browser's extension storage. The current room, chat and recap are kept in session storage, which Chrome clears when you close the browser. The last recap is kept on your device until you start a new party.
To delete everything, remove the extension from chrome://extensions. Messages you already sent were delivered to your friend's browser and are kept there only for their session.
Who can join a room
Anyone who knows your room code or invite link can join. Only share it with people you want to watch with.
Children
WatchTogether is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly handle information from them.
